Loren Johnson was Chris's grandfather and in many ways is just like Chris when it comes down to beliefs and their attitudes toward life. Both these men were stubborn and wanted to push themselves to the limit. Also both Chris and Loren were outdoorsmen and were very fond of wild life. For example, Chris had a dog named Buck who he loved unconditionally and was pretty much best friends with the dog. On the other hand, Loren had accidentally killed a mother deer while driving home and he actually took in the baby deer and raised it as one of his own.

Leo Tolstoy is like Chris in that his childhood had a similar plot that almost ran parallel to Chris, and he had some of the same thoughts and ideas as Chris. First of all, Leo did have more siblings than McCandless and was born into Russian nobility, but Tolstoy during college became unwilling to learn and dropped out to travel and gamble. After creating large gambling debts, Tolstoy ran away to the army and decided to release his anarchist ideas through another way besides gambling. This time he chose literature. Tolstoy then toured Europe confiding in different authors for ideas just as Chris did throughout the entire novel. Finally, the biggest comparison between the two is their death because in the winter of 1910 Leo decided to leave his family and wealth to travel out into the night underprepared where he will die at Astapovo station cold and alone.
